Donnafugata, a wonderful opportunity to get a taste of this lifestyle
Sicilians have an enviable choice of wines and vineyards to choose from when they need a little something to introduce to their table in the evening. Tourists, therefore, have a wonderful opportunity to get a taste of this lifestyle too. The sensational options available with so many wineries and wines on a single island make this a memorable holiday indeed.
Donnafugata has three wineries on the western side of the island – Marsala, Contessa Entellina and Pantelleria. The name is famous among wine connoisseurs for the complexity that is introduced into each and every bottle. They also produce grappas and olive oil so they really do have something for everyone to enjoy, even the non-drinkers among us!
The wines produced by Donnafugata are familiar and easy to spot in terms of the labels added to each bottle. They are rather more artistic than many other producers go for, and this perhaps provides a more representative measure of the contents of the bottle too. They have a nice mix of wines that provide white, red and rose options for you to consider. Each wine will be made from one or more grape varieties. Each one benefits from the sublime growing conditions present on the western side of Sicily, ensuring a polished finish in each case.
There are seven whites in total, including a couple of chardonnays. The collection of red and rose options boasts six choices, with one rose and the rest reds. Look out for a feisty merlot, not to mention some cabernet sauvignon options as well.
There is but one sparkling wine – a Metodo Classico sparkling wine, produced in limited edition quantities and providing a true taste of the Mediterranean. If you are looking for something a little special surely this is it.
Finally, if you have a taste for something sweeter, Donnafugata also produces a limited range of sweet wines. These all hail from the Pantelleria winery on the island of the same name, taking full advantage of the conditions there to produce something truly special.
When you rent a villa and visit Sicily you may elect to go self-catering. What better excuse could there be to do so and to lay on a nice meal for the evening than having the knowledge you can complement the meal with a Donnafugata wine? A visit to the winery of your choice, and of course the selection of a bottle or two to take back to your villa, could provide a wonderful end to a special day.
